Jayne ran in the 100 meter dash quarter finals at the USA Track & Field National Junior Olympics and placed 37th overall. Quite an accomplishment with participants from all over the U.S. and qualifying at the state and regional levels to be able to participate.
The club track season is over, and now we look forward to Jayne's Junior year of high school track!

We were at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh both Saturday and Sunday for the USA Track and Field National Qualifying meet. Athletes from six states competed, and only the top 5 would go to Baltimore, Maryland for the USATF National Junior Olympics. Jayne qualified in the 100m dash, taking 4th place in both the preliminary race on Saturday and the finals on Sunday. She just missed qualifying in the 200m dash, placing 6th.

We will be leaving for Baltimore July 24th, and Jayne will run in the quarter finals of the 100m dash on Wednesday, July 25th. Semi-finals are July 27th, with finals on the 29th.

Another hot day at the track . . . Jayne won her heat in the 100m dash (Lane 4), with four heats of Intermediate Girls, and went on to place 5th in finals (Lane 7). Typically, there would be club teams only from Wisconsin, but several teams from Chicago also participated, ratcheting up the competition. In the 200m dash, Jayne placed 2nd in her heat and 3rd overall (Lane 6), with five heats competing.
We have decided to focus on getting Jayne to the USATF Junior Olympics in Baltimore, Maryland this year to change things up. The past three summers Jayne has qualified for the AAU National Junior Olympics. (We are going to take a break this coming weekend.)

Jayne is now with the Hawks Track Club and competed in her first USA Track & Field meet of the summer. She placed 1st in her preliminary heat of the 100m dash (Lane 2, wearing black with a pink waistband on her shorts). Listen to the crowd, and you can hear someone say "Wow" as she went through the finish line! In the pouring rain, Jayne took 3rd in the 100m finals. She placed 3rd in her heat for the 200m dash (Lane 3), which ended up being 3rd overall. Of the 4 heats of the 200, her heat was by far the fastest.
Jayne earned two more medals and qualified for the USATF Region VII Junior Olympics at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh July 7th and 8th. At that meet, Jayne will need to place in the top five in each event in order to qualify for National Junior Olympics in Baltimore, Maryland.

The successful Warhawks season came to a quiet end when they failed to score a point in last weekend's WIAA State Meet in La Crosse.
In the 100 meters, sophomore Jayne Bertieri missed out on making the finals by just 0.02 of a second with a 12.63 second trials time, good for 11th.
She also joined with fellow underclassmen Sammie Gassner, Bethany Laubenheimer and Sydney Langmann, to take 14th in the trials of the 400 relay (50.82).
Bertieri wasn't the only one to suffer a near miss on the finals for the Warhawks, as junior 300 hurdler Jennifer Ellis came up 0.16 short of the finals, also taking 11th in 46.26.
Also taking part at state, senior Caitlin Dillon ended her fine career in La Crosse, taking 21st of 24 in the 800 with a clocking of 2:25.08. In the shot put, junior Katelyn Turner was 17th of 24 with a distance of 35-5 1/4 while senior Melissa Asmondy failed to record a distance in the discus.
The meet ended a fine season for the Warhawks, as despite numerous injuries, they still managed to win the North Shore Conference Relays.

The 4x100m relay didn't fare as well as expected due to a poor handoff earlier in the race. Jayne was able to move the relay up a couple of places to a 14th place finish. Germantown - It's like Germantown girls track coach Greg Siegert said: "In the end, it just comes down to the time, the height and the distance, and if it's good enough, then it's good enough."
And in the end, the Warhawks were good enough, as the collective scream of approval coming from the Germantown tent settled under the trees on the west side of the Menomonee Falls track on May 24 testified.
Public address announcer Gerry Mislang had just called out the results of the girls WIAA sectional 400-meter relay. In that race, Warhawks anchor Jayne Bertieri had to run hard to chase down the Grafton anchor for the third and final WIAA state qualifying spot, only the finish was too close to call at the line.
No one really knew if Germantown was in or not. The aforementioned joyful noise clarified what the all-underclassmen team of Bertieri, Sammie Gassner, Bethany Laubenheimer and Sydney Langmann already knew.
They were going to La Crosse, they had finished third.
"I had to make up so many meters, I couldn't remember, make up a number," laughed Bertieri, who also will go to La Crosse in the 100 dash. "I think we were sixth or so when I got the baton. This is just great, amazing, because it's so much more fun going to state with a group.
"When we found out, we just had to scream at the top of our lungs (laughs)."
"I know there was a lot of pressure on Jayne, but she responded well," Siegert said. "Like everyone else, she had a job to do and she got it done."
As did a number of other Warhawks this day, as Bertieri and the relay will be joined in La Crosse this weekend by senior distance ace Caitlin Dillon (800), Jennifer Ellis (300 low hurdles), Katelyn Turner (shot put) and Melissa Asmondy (discus).
WIAA Division 1 preliminaries and some finals will be held at Memorial Stadium on the UW-La Crosse campus starting at 9:30 a.m. Friday. The remainder of finals are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Both of Bertieri's efforts were school records as the Warhawks finished fourth in the 15-team sectional field with 64 points as Arrowhead won with 135.
She was second in the 100 in an impressive 12.34 seconds and she led the relay to a 50.3 time, which was the same time that Grafton recorded.
The two hugged and laughed afterward.
"This feels great," Dillon said. "I knew I had a chance in the 800 (after taking fifth in the 1,600). I just had to keep my mind to it. I just knew I had to stay with Lauren and I'd be OK. I needed to get back to La Crosse and I want to get on that podium (top six) next week."
Dillon was on the school record state-place-winning 3,200 relay of a few years ago that included Wendt and Sielicki.
The weight crew more than held up its end for the Warhawks, as Turner, a junior, edged out her senior teammate Asmondy for the third and final spot in the shot put. Turner tossed it a personal best of 36-4 1/2 , which was two feet better than her regional seed while Asmondy was fourth with a 35-9.
But Asmondy came back to snag the third and final spot in the discus with a throw of 102-10, three inches better than a competitor from Cedarburg.
"It would have been a little sad for the junior (Turner) to have beaten out the senior (for a state spot), but it was great that Melissa was able to bounce back like that (in the discus)," Siegert said.
Ellis remained very steady in the 300 hurdles, taking second in a school record effort of 45.58.
"I was a little worried about the heat and the wind (gusting wind and 80-degree temperatures), but it all worked out," Ellis said. "I just wanted to go out as hard as I could and then just keep the speed up. I'm hoping for good things next week (at state). I was there last year, so I think I know how it works now."
Other sectional efforts for the Warhawks included the following: 100 high hurdles: Ellis, sixth (personal best 15.72); 1,600 relay: Ellis, Bertieri, Gassner and Dillon, fifth (4:08.49); and 1,600: Dillon, fifth (5:39.57).

Stepping up to the pressure

Continuing the tradition
Dillon was another nice story for the Warhawks, as she is the last of the great recent line of distance runners for Germantown that included Kate Lydy, Andrea Sielicki and Liz Wendt. She earned second in the 800 to friend and competitor Lauren Holtz of Homestead. Holtz was clocked in 2:17.91 and Dillon in 2;18.96.The two hugged and laughed afterward.

What an amazing night at Sectionals! Jayne not only qualified for two events at State, but she also has two new school records at Germantown High School!

Jayne took 2nd in the 100m dash, with a time of 12.34 seconds. She now holds the school record, breaking the previous record of 12.43. When Jayne came off of the track, Coach Siegert hugged her. Jayne told me later that he has only hugged one other person in all of his years of coaching. Jayne is now ranked 9th in the state!
The 4x100m relay was quite intense. (As I was taping, I didn't move the camera at the end because I was so excited. Jayne overtook the Grafton runner in the orange at the finish line.) With Jayne anchoring, the relay was in 7th place when she received the baton. She really turned it on and brought the team to 3rd place, qualifing the relay for State. The relay broke the school record they set earlier this season, with a time of 50.30 seconds. The top four 4x100 relays in the state were in our Sectionals, so this was quite the show. The Gtown relay is now ranked 7th in the state.
The 4x400m relay team came in 5th, so the girls are not moving on in this event - but that is okay.
Eight Germantown girls have qualified for State. In addition to Jayne's 100m dash and 4x100m relay, we have girls in the discus, shot put, 300m hurdles, and the 800m run. Germantown took 5th place out of the 16 team Sectional.

Jayne qualified for Sectionals in all three events she ran. She took 2nd place in both the 100m dash and 4x100m relay. The 4x400m relay took 4th place.
Regionals are the first step to qualify for State. The top four finishers of each event at Regionals move on to Sectionals, and then the top three finishers at Sectionals (Thursday night) qualify for State. Stay tuned.

Jennifer Ellis won 300 low hurdles and Melissa Asmondy claimed the shot put as the Warhawks took second in the North Shore Conference outdoor at Grafton on May 15.
Ellis won her race by more than a second in 47.31 while Asmondy took advantage of the absence of a top competitor from Nicolet to claim her title by three inches with a throw of 35-6.
Germantown took part in the WIAA regional meet at Sussex Hamilton on Monday and qualifiers from there advanced to the sectional meet Thursday at Menomonee Falls. The top three in each event plus all those whose efforts are among the top eight of all sectionals statewide advance to the state meet in La Crosse on June 1 and 2.
"We've been training hard and I think everyone is ready to go," said Ellis.
The Warhawks scored 100.2 points for their spot as Whitefish Bay defended its outdoor title with 118.
Jayne Bertieri also had a good meet for Germantown, taking second in both the 100 (13.02) and the 200 dashes (26.49).
Other good places by event for the Warhawks included 100 high hurdles, Ellis, third (16.1); 100 dash, Bethany Laubenheimer, fifth (13.67); 1,600, Caitlin Dillon, third (5:14.28); 800 relay, third (1:52.27); 400 relay, fifth (52.22); 800, Dillon, third (2:24.11); 1,600 relay, third (4:12.92); long jump, Chanelle Harris, fifth (14-9 ½); and shot put, Katelyn Turner, fourth (33-7).

The Germantown Girls placed second in the North Shore Conference Tuesday night. Jayne won her heat of 100m prelims and then took second in both the 100m and 200m dash. It wasn't a great night (5th place) for the 4x100 relay due to a bad handoff before it got to Jayne.

In a busy last week of the regular season, the Warhawks were competitive in both the Richmond/ Erickson Invitational in Wauwatosa on May 8 and in the Cedarburg true team meet on May 11.
Coach Greg Siegert was pleased with the effort, noting that the 400 relay team of Sammie Gassner, Bethany Laubenheimer, Sydney Langmann and Jayne Bertieri set a meet record at the Richmond/ Erickson event and noted that discus thrower Melissa Asmondy turned in a great effort of 109 feet in her event.
Laubenheimer is back three weeks early from a shoulder injury, another encouraging factor for the Warhawks said Siegert.
Germantown took part in the North Shore Conference outdoor on Tuesday and looks forward to the WIAA regional meet at Sussex Hamilton on May 21.
In the Cedarburg true team meet, where scoring was to 36 places, Germantown was third behind West Bend West and Homestead.
Caitlin Dillon continued her senior season resurgence with a first in the 1,600 (5:17.0) and a second in the 800 (2:22.57) while Jennifer Ellis had another good meet, taking second in the 100 high hurdles (15.95) and third in the 300 low hurdles (46.93).
"Jennifer makes it easy for everyone on the coaching staff because we know exactly what we're getting from her every time," Siegert said.
The 400 relay team of Gassner, Laubenheimer, Langmann and Bertieri was second with a season best of 50.62, while Bertieri had an excellent individual meet, taking second in the 100 (12.57) and fourth in the 200 (26.41).
Germantown was fourth in the Richmond/Erickson meet with 102 points as Waterford won with 157. That record-setting 400 relay team turned in a time of 51.74.
Asmondy also won the shot put with a toss of 35-1 while Katelyn Turner was second (32-5) as Ellis also took the 300 low hurdles (47.14). Bertieri was second in the 100 (12.97), as was Dillon in the 1,600 (5:14.04), Andrea Brown in the 800 (2:32.47) and the 800 relay (1:50.87).
Bertieri was third in the 200 (26.68).

Coach Greg Siegert was pleased with the effort, noting that the 400 relay team of Sammie Gassner, Bethany Laubenheimer, Sydney Langmann and Jayne Bertieri set a meet record at the Richmond/ Erickson event and noted that discus thrower Melissa Asmondy turned in a great effort of 109 feet in her event.
Laubenheimer is back three weeks early from a shoulder injury, another encouraging factor for the Warhawks said Siegert.
Germantown took part in the North Shore Conference outdoor on Tuesday and looks forward to the WIAA regional meet at Sussex Hamilton on May 21.
In the Cedarburg true team meet, where scoring was to 36 places, Germantown was third behind West Bend West and Homestead.
Caitlin Dillon continued her senior season resurgence with a first in the 1,600 (5:17.0) and a second in the 800 (2:22.57) while Jennifer Ellis had another good meet, taking second in the 100 high hurdles (15.95) and third in the 300 low hurdles (46.93).
"Jennifer makes it easy for everyone on the coaching staff because we know exactly what we're getting from her every time," Siegert said.
The 400 relay team of Gassner, Laubenheimer, Langmann and Bertieri was second with a season best of 50.62, while Bertieri had an excellent individual meet, taking second in the 100 (12.57) and fourth in the 200 (26.41).
Germantown was fourth in the Richmond/Erickson meet with 102 points as Waterford won with 157. That record-setting 400 relay team turned in a time of 51.74.
Asmondy also won the shot put with a toss of 35-1 while Katelyn Turner was second (32-5) as Ellis also took the 300 low hurdles (47.14). Bertieri was second in the 100 (12.97), as was Dillon in the 1,600 (5:14.04), Andrea Brown in the 800 (2:32.47) and the 800 relay (1:50.87).
Bertieri was third in the 200 (26.68).

Jayne Earns Two More Medals
With Jayne anchoring the 4 x 100 meter relay, the Germantown Girls set a new school record of 50.62 seconds! The relay came in second, after Sussex Hamilton, which holds the state's best time this year. The Germantown 4 x 100 relay moved to the fourth best time in the state rankings.
Jayne set new personal records (PRs) in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. She came in 2nd in the 100, with a time of 12.57, ranking her 12th in the state. She took 4th in the 200, with a PR of 26.41, which ranks her 20th in the state.
She added two more medals to her ever growing collection. These are her seventh and eighth medals earned so far this season.

'Next man up' attitude nets Germantown girls track team NSC relays title
Many obstacles overcome in claiming crown
Germantown - The meet started out as a nightmare for the host Germantown girls and the North Shore Conference Relays on May 2.
Meet officials had called all the head coaches over early and explained to them that because of heavy rains the night before, the shot put pit had something akin to a 7-foot-long puddle from about 20 to 27 feet out. The puddle was also several feet wide.
Retired Germantown football coach Phil Datka was running the event and officials initially told him to go forward with the event, but it soon became clear that it was impossible to get accurate marks throwing into water ("The poor kid marking for me was drenched," Datka said.).
Officials called all the head coaches together and agreed that something had to be done, so Athletic Director Jack Klebesadel brought in several bags of diamond dry used for baseball games and filled in the area as best it could be, as Datka had the athletes restart the competition with new throws.
"Of all the things that were on my checklist to do, that was not one I thought of," said an incredulous Warhawks girls coach Greg Siegert about checking the shot put area.
But that's when the nightmare started turning into a very pleasant dream for the Warhawks.
Injuries piling up
For despite the litany of injuries that have crossed the Germantown team's path this season (they could fill an average size team roster), the Warhawks used one first and a whole lot of depth to pull out the title in the annual event.No Leah Wheaton (knee), no problem; no Bethany Laubenheimer (labrum issue), no big deal; and top hurdler/sprinter Sammie Gassner, being limited in her choice of events due to a stress fracture, hey, it's OK.
That's because the Warhawks have adopted a true team identity, according to Siegert.
"It shows that everything I know about this team to be true," he said. "That we're a team built on numbers, on an assembly line. Our training is built on training multiple athletes to be ready for multiple events."
To prove his point, Siegert was talking to one of his junior varsity coaches. His team was scheduled to take part in a large meet May 3 (which was eventually canceled due to bad weather). Siegert was telling that coach that he would be a bit short-handed for his event, because Siegert had plucked about seven athletes off junior varsity squad to play roles in the depth-intensive varsity relays meet.
"We lived and died with those kids tonight," Siegert said.
Germantown scored 74 points for its title as Whitefish Bay was second with 68 and Cedarburg third with 65.
Team results come late
The only victory came from the discus crew of Melissa Asmondy (top individual throw of 109-0), Katelyn Turner and Rachel Claussen.Behind that, the Warhawks had six second-place finishes including the sprint medley relay team of Sydney Langmann, Caitlin Dillon, Jayne Bertieri and Gassner (1:55.67); the 300 high hurdle shuttle of Taylor Edmonds, Jackie Lemerond and Jennifer Ellis (54.42); the 900 low hurdle relay of Edmonds, Lemerond and Ellis (who had the best individual time of 47.14); the 3,200 relay team of Andrea Brown, April Okruszynski, Alyse Barrelmann and Dillon (10:20.12); the 1,600 relay of Bertieri, Gassner, Ellis and Beth Kuske (4:15.45); and the shot put trio of Asmondy, Turner and Becky Breunig.
Dillon had a tremendous 800 split on her anchor leg of the 3,200 (2:21) to get the Warhawks second and Asmondy had the second best individual shot put toss of 33-7 1/2 .
"We're just taking it all in stride, moving on to the next race," said Ellis, echoing her coach's team-first attitude.
Earning thirds for Germantown were the 400 relay team of Gassner, Liz Gilbert, Bertieri and Langmann (52.03); and the high jump team of Kuske, Dillon and Edmonds.
Another glitch developed late in the day, when it was discovered that PT Timing, which was timing and scoring the meet, was scoring all events to eight places, when in a relay meet, it should be only to six places. Fortunately, it turned out that Germantown would have come out ahead in either situation.
However, almost everyone on the team had gone home by the time the final scores were called out, so Siegert had a fun task to do at a short team meeting held the day after the meet.
"We had a chance to distribute the awards, because a lot of the kids weren't even aware that we had won," he said. "So many of them have big AP (advanced placement) tests coming up and were working so hard on them, that we just made sure that they got home at a decent hour (so they could study).
"We just didn't want to keep them around that long, but in the end, we were able to tell them about the nice little reward (the championship) that they had earned."

The eight teams in our conference competed in a meet consisting of all relays. The Germantown Girls Varsity Track Team provided a great team effort to take first place in the meet. This is the first time Germantown has won Conference Relays. It was 88 degrees and a beautiful night for a meet.
Jayne ran 100m, as the third leg, in the 800 meter sprint medley relay (200m, 100m, 100m, 400m) taking 2nd place. She was anchor of the 4x100m relay, where they placed 3rd. And for her third event of the night, Jayne anchored the 4x400m relay, and the girls took 2nd.

Slowly getting healthier, the Warhawks got victories from Jennifer Ellis in the 100 high hurdles and from the 400 relay team of Jayne Bertieri, Sammie Gassner, Bethany Laubenheimer and Sydney Langmann in earning fourth in the Brookfield East Invitational on April 18.
"We've had so many people hurt that we've had to fill in the pieces as best we could," said Bertieri, who anchored the state honor roll relay effort of 51.69 seconds. "Sammie was running for the first time today (because of a foot problem) and even I had to leave practice early yesterday because I was sick."
Germantown scored 56 points for its spot in the 17-team East meet.
The relay won by more than a half-second over Menomonee Falls, while Ellis had a 0.66 margin over her nearest competitor in claiming the high hurdles (16.31). She was also second in the 300 low hurdles (48.64).
Other good finishes by event included the following: 800 relay: fourth (10:25.27); 100 hurdles: Taylor Edmonds, sixth (17.72); 100 dash: Bertieri, third (13.09); 1,600 relay: fifth (4:23.71); shot put: Melissa Asmondy, fourth (33-5); and discus: Katelyn Turner, sixth (92-0).

First Indoor Meet of the Season at Brookfield East with 17 Varsity Girls Teams Competing
Jayne won her 100 meter heat and headed to the finals for a 3rd place finish. Jayne anchored the 4x100 meter relay, and Germantown took first place! You have got to see this video, as Germantown was in 3rd or 4th place when Jayne took over and blew everyone away. (Videos links are in pink.) She also was the first runner in the 4x400 meter relay, which was a new race for Jayne. Her split time for the 400 was 62 seconds, which means she has the fastest 400 for Germantown Varsity Girls. The relay came in 5th place.
A couple of really great first time things happened at this meet. For the first time, Jayne made the State Honor Roll in the 100m dash and the Germantown 4x100m relay is ranked 2nd in the State at 51.69 seconds!
Jayne was also interviewed by the local sports reporter for the first, but certainly not the last, time. Here is a photo, and I will post the article when it is published next week.

Germantown - With top performers Sammie Gassner (foot) and Leah Wheaton (knee) out before the season even started, the Germantown girls track team knew it had to improvise in the early going. So far the plan is working, as the Warhawks, despite not a single event first still managed a strong second-place finish in the North Shore Conference Indoor at Cedarburg on April 3.
"All we could do going into this meet was what we could do," coach Greg Siegert said. "We just told the kids to do your best and forget about the rest, and look what we were able to do. We had just a ton of PRs (personal records) tonight."
Germantown scored 80 points for its spot as Grafton won with 100 and defending champion Whitefish Bay was third with 75.
The Warhawks took four second-place finishes to lead their efforts, as Jayne Bertieri took one in the 55-meter dash (7.86) while others went to Jennifer Ellis in the 55 hurdles (9.34), Bethany Laubenheimer in the long jump (16-3 1/2 ) and Melissa Asmondy in the shot put (34-2 3/4 ).
Siegert praised the efforts of Bertieri and Laubenheimer.
Thirds went to Beth Kuske in the high jump (4-10) and to the 1,600 relay team (4:29.5).
Other top six performances included the following: 200: Bertieri, fourth (28.8); 400: Ellis, fifth (1:06.68); 1,600: Caitlin Dillon, fourth (5:20.8); 55 hurdles: Taylor Edmonds, fifth (10.05); Four-lap relay: fifth (1:33.76); 3,200 relay: fourth (11:04.0); pole vault: Cassidy Dunn, sixth (7-6). long jump: Kuske, sixth (15-5); and shot put: Katelyn Turner, fifth (32-5 3/4 ).
"The kids knew what kind of situation that we were in (given the injuries)," Siegert said, "but the varsity group has been absolutely outstanding. They give 100 percent all the time. They've given the new things that we've been trying a real shot."

North Shore Indoor Conference

Last night was the Indoor Conference Track Meet, where all 8 teams in the North Shore Conference competed. The Germantown Girls Varsity Track Team placed 2nd in Conference.
Earlier in the day, I was looking at a baby name book with a member of my marketing team and learned that the name "Jayne" means "Victorious". That was an accurate description of Jayne's results last night. She won her heat, qualified for the finals and took 2nd in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.86 seconds and earned another medal. She went on to place 4th in the 200 meter dash. It was a great night!
Tomorrow is another big day for Jayne. She is taking her driver's license test!
