AAU District Qualifier

Another hot day at the track . . .  Jayne won her heat in the 100m dash (Lane 4), with four heats of Intermediate Girls,  and went on to place 5th in finals (Lane 7).  Typically, there would be club teams only from Wisconsin, but several teams from Chicago also participated, ratcheting up the competition.  In the 200m dash, Jayne placed 2nd in her heat and 3rd overall (Lane 6), with five heats competing.

We have decided to focus on getting Jayne to the USATF Junior Olympics in Baltimore, Maryland this year to change things up.  The past three summers Jayne has qualified for the AAU National Junior Olympics.  (We are going to take a break this coming weekend.)

Jayne is now with the Hawks Track Club and competed in her first USA Track & Field meet of the summer. She placed 1st in her preliminary heat of the 100m dash (Lane 2, wearing black with a pink waistband on her shorts).  Listen to the crowd, and you can hear someone say "Wow" as she went through the finish line!  In the pouring rain, Jayne took 3rd in the 100m finals.  She placed 3rd in her heat for the 200m dash (Lane 3), which ended up being 3rd overall.  Of the 4 heats of the 200, her heat was by far the fastest.

Jayne earned two more medals and qualified for the USATF Region VII Junior Olympics at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh July 7th and 8th.  At that meet, Jayne will need to place in the top five in each event in order to qualify for National Junior Olympics in Baltimore, Maryland.

The successful Warhawks season came to a quiet end when they failed to score a point in last weekend's WIAA State Meet in La Crosse.

In the 100 meters, sophomore Jayne Bertieri missed out on making the finals by just 0.02 of a second with a 12.63 second trials time, good for 11th.

She also joined with fellow underclassmen Sammie Gassner, Bethany Laubenheimer and Sydney Langmann, to take 14th in the trials of the 400 relay (50.82).

Bertieri wasn't the only one to suffer a near miss on the finals for the Warhawks, as junior 300 hurdler Jennifer Ellis came up 0.16 short of the finals, also taking 11th in 46.26.

Also taking part at state, senior Caitlin Dillon ended her fine career in La Crosse, taking 21st of 24 in the 800 with a clocking of 2:25.08. In the shot put, junior Katelyn Turner was 17th of 24 with a distance of 35-5 1/4 while senior Melissa Asmondy failed to record a distance in the discus.

The meet ended a fine season for the Warhawks, as despite numerous injuries, they still managed to win the North Shore Conference Relays.

Preliminary races were held last Thursday, with the top ten moving on to the Finals on Friday.  Jayne placed 11th in the 100m dash and missed the cut off by 2/100ths of a second.  The 4x100m relay didn't fare as well as expected due to a poor handoff earlier in the race.  Jayne was able to move the relay up a couple of places to a 14th place finish.  With that, the 2012 school track season is over!  Club track starts in just a few days!
