Track and Field Signs Three New Recruits

MILWAUKEE, WIS. (Aug. 6, 2014)—As the new school year and collegiate athletic seasons begin to start, the Cardinal Stritch University Wolves track and Field program have been busy building their roster for this upcoming competitive season. The Stritch track and field program have announced this week the signing of three new recruits, Marleigh Petras (Milwaukee, Wis.), Alize Souter (Milwaukee, Wis.), and Jayne Bertieri (Germantown, Wis.).

Marliegh Petras comes to Stritch as a graduate of Pulaski High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She will be an extremely competitive runner for the Wolves as a sprinter, running the 4x100 through the 4x400 sprints. Petras was a 2013 Wisconsin State Track and Field Championship qualifier in the 4x400.

Alize Souter will join the track and field program as a relay runner, as well as, a jumper. Souter recently graduated from Milwaukee Vincent high school and has impressive stats on the track. She is a two time Wisconsin State Track and Field Championship high jump and triple-jump qualifier. Alize also qualified for the AAU National Championships, where she was recognized as an All-American, placing seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 37'10".

The third signed recruit Jayne Bertieri will join Stritch in the fall recently graduating from Germantown High School. A sprinter, Bertieri has an impressive track record. She holds the 100 meter, 4x100 meter relay, and 4x200 meter relay records at Germantown High School. She has had multiple Wisconsin State Track and Field Championship appearances and finishes. In 2012 she finished 11th in the 100 meter dash, 11th in the 4x100 meter relay in 2013, and 10th in the 4x200 meter relay in 2014.

The Cardinal Stritch University Athletic Department and track and field program are excited to have these three join the pack for next year, and are looking forward to watching them rise through the college rankings in their collegiate track and field careers.

State Track Meet - Day 2 Finals

The 4x200 relay placed tenth in finals at the State track meet in LaCrosse.  It was an interesting day.  After three heats of the first event, lightening was spotted.  The stadium was evacuated, and we had a six hour rain/lightening delay.  The relay finally ran at 7 p.m., and the meet ended close to midnight.

Germantown track programs to send nine entries to WIAA state meet

Girls advance five, boys four

By Steven L. Tietz
June 3, 2014

The concept of a single joint coach for the Germantown track program is still a work in progress admitted coach Greg Siegert.

But despite some hiccups, the initial results are promising as the Warhawks advanced three individuals and two relays for the girls and three individuals and a relay for the boys to this weekend's WIAA State Meet in La Crosse.

"We figure we're taking about 19 kids," Siegert said. "That's a lot of kids. What we're doing here this season is laying down a foundation, a foundation built on discipline and hard work."

The Warhawk boys, who were a surprise winner of the WIAA regional meet on May 27, advanced repeat state qualifier Nick Holcomb in the long and triple jump, as well as Trevor Becker in the 3200-meter run. They also will send the 4x800 relay team that will include Nick Foti, Preston Yahr, Cory Rhind, Lucas Sbragia and Brett Dzik.

For the girls, seniors Khia Kurtenbach and Jayne Bertieri will shepherd to state a large group of freshmen and sophomores. Kurtenbach, a first-year track athlete who had experienced great success on the swim team, will lead freshmen Molly Baus, Calli Lemke and Alyssa Goesch on the 4x800 relay, while the senior three-time state qualifier Bertieri will pace sophomores Rosalie Campbell and Erika Bethhauser and freshman Kenzie Schmitz to see if they can better their new school record in the 4x200 relay.

Schmitz will also advance in the high jump, and Goesch will enter state as the second seed in the 800.
Everyone is looking forward to the experience. "I didn't have a lot of track experience," Kurtenbach said, "so this feels like I worked for it. It's been a really fun thing, trying a different sport, be a beginner again and watch my times drop."

D1 state meet competition will get underway at about 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 6 at UW-La Crosse's Memorial Stadium. All trials and most finals will start then. The remainder of the finals will start at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 7.

Sectional overview

For some, this is the just reward for years of hard work while others are just trying it out. All of it came to a head at the WIAA sectional qualifying meet at Sussex Hamilton on May 30.

Meanwhile, success has been with the girls most of the season. Kurtenbach and Goesch led the way on the 4x800 relay for the girls, as they turned in a season best of 9:37.22 — good for third.  "We really wanted this," Goesch said. "We've been running good people in it from the beginning so this doesn't surprise us."
Goesch turned around put in a scorching 2:17.23 runner-up showing in the 800.  Kurtenbach earned her spot in the 3200 with a runner-up personal best showing of 11:11.73, which puts her among the leaders going into state.

Bertieri was ill but still had enough as she helped the 4x200 relay drop still more time from their school record set earlier this season with a third place 1:44.62.

Schmitz claimed her high jump spot with a third-place effort of 5-0 in the high jump.

Other sectional efforts for the girls, who finished fourth of 16 in the team standings, included the following: discus — Maddie Stewart, fifth (97-2), and Olivia Verdin, sixth (95-0); high jump — Emily Viduski, fourth (4-11); 4x100 relay — Bethhauser, Schmitz, Tatum Gallenberger and Bertieri, fifth (season best 50.11); 300 low hurdles — Megan Hedinger, fourth (personal best 47.88); 4x400 relay — Campbell, Gallenberger, Schmitz and Goesch, fifth (season best 4:02.45); 1600 — Julia Schroder, seventh (5:44.65).

GOING TO STATE!

Jayne is going to the State Track Meet this Friday and Saturday at the University of Wisconsin LaCrosse.  This is her third trip to State in her third different event - the 4x200 relay. In previous years, Jayne has qualified in the 100m dash and 4x100 relay (two times).

In what is considered to be the most competitive Sectional in Wisconsin,  the 4x200 relay dropped more time from their school record set last week in a third place time of 1:44.62.

VIDEOS:  Jayne - Second Leg of the 4x200   (Relay was in first place after the second leg.)
Kenzie - Anchor of the 4x200  (Kenzie brought the team up from 4th to 3rd to qualify. The top three finishes qualified for State.)

The 4x100 relay ran a season best time of 50.11. (Jayne's relay school record from last year was 50.03.)  This relay just missed the cut to go to State. The 4x100 ran just 8 1/2 minutes after the 4x200 with three of the same runners, which didn't allow for much recovery time.

The 4x200 will run Friday morning in prelims, and if they qualify in the top ten, they will run Saturday morning.  Results available on June 6-7 on the WIAA website.

Good luck to the eight young ladies and six young men from the Warhawks track teams who qualified!

Germantown senior sprinter Jayne Bertieri just laughs when she thinks of how old she is compared to the rest of her surprisingly successful Warhawks girls track squad.

"There must be something like 80 freshmen on this team," she said at the North Shore Conference Outdoor on May 20. "I'm the only senior sprinter out there and I'm just so happy to be part of it all. I hope this (season) never comes to an end."

But the end is in sight, and Bertieri and her youthful comrades are making the most of it. She was part of winning 4x100 and 4x200-meter relay teams at the NSC Outdoor and also watched as an equally youthful 4x400 team also claimed the title in its race as Germantown took a strong third in the event.

"We were just trying to do things that played into our strengths and it worked out pretty well," said Warhawks coach Greg Siegert of the relay teams. "Our future is really bright on the girls side (with so many freshmen). We're even thinking about next year about how we can build on our depth."

Eyes on the prize

But for the moment, Siegert, Bertieri and the rest are clearly focused on the here and now as they look to earn some valuable state meet experience. They took part in the WIAA regional meet at Cedarburg on May 27 and will now send qualifiers from there to the sectional meet at Sussex Hamilton on Friday, May 30.

From there, the top three in each event plus all those whose efforts are among the eight best of all sectionals statewide will advance to the WIAA State Meet in La Crosse on June 6 and 7.

"We'll see a lot of competition, but we are confident," said Siegert of the sectional.

Behind the three relay wins, Germantown finished with 113-1/2 points at the outdoor as Whitefish Bay edged Homestead, 146-140, for the title.

The highlight of the three titles was the school record effort of 1 minute, 45.59 seconds of the 4x200 team of Rosalie Campbell, Bertieri, Erika Betthauser and Kenzie Schmitz. The squad took more than 1.5 seconds off the old mark of 1:47.23.

"I've never run the 4x200 until this year and it's fun," said Bertieri.

Betthauser broke open the race with an explosive third leg that left the competition well in the rear-view mirror.

"We can count on her to do certain things that others just can't," said Siegert of Bethauser.

The 4x100 team of Bethauser, Schmitz, Tatum Gallenberger and Bertieri then set a season best mark of 50.72 in easily cruising to a win in its event.

A young win

Germantown also had some fun at the end, as the ridiculously young 4x400 team of Campbell, Gallenberger, Molly Baus and Alyssa Goesch came across in a winning time of 4:05.33.

The Warhawks were trailing Grafton in the race until the final 150 meters or so, when Goesch, better known for her 800 and 1,600-meter exploits, slipped into an amazing gear off the final turn and wound up winning as she closed with a blistering 400 split of 59.1.

As a sophomore, Campbell was the elder stateswoman on the 4x400 team as the other three are freshmen.
Other good efforts for the Warhawks included the following: 100—Bertieri, third (13.15); Gallenberger, fourth (13.23). 200—Bethauser, fourth (26.95); Schmitz, fifth (27.15). 400—Baus, fifth (1:02.59). 800—Goesch, third (2:21.43). 1,600—Khia Kurtenbach, third (5:15.23). 110 high hurdles—Megan Hedinger, fourth (17.3). 300 low hurdles—Hedinger, fourth (49.89). 4x800—Calli Lemke, Baus, Julia Schroder and Goesch, third (10:11.66). Shot put—Olivia Verdin, sixth (31-10 1/2). Discus—Verdin, fourth (95-9). High jump—Schmitz, fourth (5-0). Long jump—Erin Willard, third (16-6 1/4). Triple jump—Willard, sixth (32-5).

Siegert was excited about the meet and has been impressed by the work of the team's few upperclassmen, such as Bertieri, in helping lead the younger members of the squads down the road of success.

"Jayne can be very headstrong," said Siegert, "but she is a very calming influence on the rest of the team."
